Work vs Passivity

banner 2018

Hi – welcome to The SORA podcast learning to live creatively like you really mean it!

This month we’re discussing Work versus Passivity.

The podcast talks about how we can get ourselves out of the modern version of the rat race, by harmonising our yin-yang – finding peace with our inner feminine and masculine, so that our relationship with the world is maximised creatively.

Though this might sound more abstract than it could, it’s important to know the depths to which we’re conditioned into being in conflict – within ourselves, and with the world around us.

It’s not that binary thinking – boy-girl, man-woman, black-white, us-them – is inherently no good, it’s that we use ‘thinking of things as opposites of each other’ essentially to condone all kinds of conflict and violence.

art brings harmony

Instead of thinking ‘both/ and’, we use every situation in which there’s any kind of difference at all, to pitch one against the other: either/ or: one has to be right, one has to be wrong – one has to be good or bad, one has to win and one has to lose, and so on.

This kind of mental warring – and it really is a kind of internal war – makes us see all kinds of external conflict around us as ‘right’ and even ‘good’.

It says that someone must always be on top, and so someone must always be on the bottom – and this becomes scaled up to global proportions – country versus country, us versus the planet…

Which is all based on an immature stage of our human evolution: we’re stuck in child mode, without the depth and long-term vision that a grown-up should have.

We’re being called to action, we see all around us the state of the world, the pain that we’re all in, and yet, we carry on as if that is nothing to do with us….

So what can we do?

Make art.

It might seem like the most frivolous of activities, in the face of global economic-political-environmental-spiritual chaos BUT that thinking is another aspect of our conflicted conditioning.

Art in fact brings harmony, because it allows us to put in front of ourselves whatever is going on inside – it instantly makes flow, and it immediately shows us what’s really happening (which is often subtly different from what the logical brain is surmising!) – and so brings our awareness into it: the first step in profound change. Art brings oneness: it brings all things together, which slowly, gently, eases us out of polemical thinking, and into harmony.

When was the last time you approached a pure creative act and let yourself be immersed in it? If it was a long time ago, you likely will need some stimulus and perhaps even some guidance to keep you connected with what you’re doing.

Pop over to the free courses, or see the in-depth SORA course in the raw version of the school – both are filled with inspiring lessons and challenges, to get you making and expanding…. Lots more news soon!

The SORA will be releasing new lessons and courses throughout 2019 – The Intuitive Artist 101, Being Visible vs Being Exposed, The Intuitive Creative Business and more – ask any Qs below, and follow the links to sign up.

THE INTUITIVE ART BUSINESS

Hi and welcome to The School Of Real Art – and our podcast this month on THE INTUITIVE BUSINESS:

Hi dear SORA friend,

How do we make money out of our art?! Almost all courses nowadays in ‘creative business’ or ‘soulful entrepreneurship’ take us WAAAAAY in the wrong direction, and can actually be very damaging to our deepest relationship with our creativity and core power.

I talk about how our coping mechanisms are manipulated, and how our deepest creative power is intimately related to de-armouring these mechanisms – NOT to overstimulating ourselves, driving ourselves, or pushing-pushing-pushing.

artbizeffortless.jpg

I explain a little too, about how the majority of your gains and rewards from your art ARE NOTHING TO DO WITH MONEY – and how important it is to keep the perspective about this, so that you can really thrive (both creatively and financially!)

It’s not that money is not important in this reality BUT IT IS VITAL that you have your life-art-health-work-money equation in the right order!

INTUITIVE ART & INTERCONNECTEDNESS

Hi and welcome to The School Of Real Art – and our podcast this month on intuitive art and interconnectedness:

Our world is compartmentalised and detached in so many ways; from our language to our bodies, our politics and our environment, our values and (our lack of) sense of responsibility – our relationship with the world is conditioned from before birth to be disharmonious.

Many of us spend a great deal of our waking life pondering on how we can bring more harmony, more synchrony, in to our life; there are whole philosophies and new age movements based around this. And yet, it’s all so fricking illusive, eh?

In fact, the tools for bringing our state of consciousness into The Flow – for realigning -are already within us and around us – just about everyone has access to a pencil and paper, to get started…

I’m very excited, as mentioned in the podcast, to be reshaping The SORA right now – to have a completely fresh perspective and new work-space to be creating it in. My health has been very problematic this year, but I’m on top of it now, and making great progress, and already excited about setting up new videos and course pages.

In the meantime – keep in touch – go sign up for your free courses – or see the longer courses and sets of podcasts that you can purchase – it’s all over on Teachable.

So much creative inspiration and well-being to you,

WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS – DRAW THEM!

This month’s talk is about why, when life gets heavy, often our creativity is the first thing that gets put to the side. But, when we learn about real art, we realise that our creativity can act as the engine of our transforming all kinds of challenges.

A self-portrait from 1995, Glasgow School of Art – which clearly illustrates my tensions and dark emotions at the time; living off less than £2000 a year, moving around from one awful bedsit to another, struggling to understand my place in the world, feeling terribly isolated and fearful about my future, extreme anxiety trying to acclimatise to the big city….

I dealt with a lot of crazy in my life; harsh experiences left-right-and-centre, which were often exacerbated by my high-sensory-sentience. For the greater part of my first 3 decades I was genuinely struggling to hold it together; the world made me feel like an alien, and no matter where I tried to fit in, one thing after another went awry, and it never felt like home.

2006 in Wester Hailes, Edinburgh, Scotland; super-overworked trying to single-handedly transform the troubled community I lived in, hiding deep grief around family and personal losses, struggling to pay rent, finding it impossible make long-term plans involving stability, deep anxiety about how to support myself as an artist with the price of living in Scotland, craving the countryside and sunshine…

Though photos like the one above made me seem bright and engaged, inside I felt like I was fighting for my life.

Art wasn’t just my anchor during my struggles, it was a gateway into a whole inner landscape – in which I could rest, be nourished, find meaning, immerse myself in pleasure, and much more.

My creative activities methodically drew out all the inner resources that were sitting right inside – the ability to improvise, to make something out of nothing, to find beauty in the everyday and progress in the smallest of steps, to feel the interconnectedness of all things.

Healthy and well in 2018 – living in the southern Italian hills of Campania – connecting deeply with landscape, culture, language, seasons, plants, healing heritage, knowing depth and meaning, feeling like I belong, and that my art has purpose in the world.

Our creativity will always help us navigate stormy times, no matter what the overwhelm is: when we get out of our short-circuiting, panic-stricken mind, and into the rhythm of making, doing, expressing… we start to see new perspectives, possibilities, positivity – instead of being dragged under by whatever our irrational ‘logic’ might be yelling…

Last year: much more grounded, fulfilled, stable and happy… Deepest fulfilment from my art, bringing life-long-dreams into being, owning my own home outright, steady income from paintings and patronage, beautiful relationships with my clients, profound partnership with my uomo, millionaire lifestyle, steadily improving health….. yes!

By-the-by, this morning a good friend in Edinburgh told me about more than one food-growing project flourishing in Wester Hailes – a predominantly council-estate area of the city, where I lived 10 yrs ago, in crisis, but creating a visionary 100 year project for transforming council housing in Scotland – empowering community by shifting land from public liability to community ownership… Seeds planted – even in chaos – can grow and grow, even without our further striving, when we create from the deepest place.

THE DANGER OF POSITIVE THINKING!

Hi! Welcome to the School of Real Art podcast and blog, this expansive July!

This month’s talk is about positive thinking – but it’s not the usual blahblah on how everything will be alright if you just hammer enough happy thoughts into your brain…!

DSC_0101.JPG

Of course, positive thinking, loving attention, happy thoughts – these are all incredibly important aspects of our well-being – and we should cultivate them where possible.

However, jolly synapses alone cannot make us fulfilled, and they also will not draw abundance to us. To think that life is that simple, is to fall down a rabbit hole of superficial success and deepest disappointment.

If you want to have a seriously creative life, you need to know what expansion really is, so that you can grow into your own unique potential, but most ‘positive thinking’ or new age openness is essentially about aiming for others’ ideals.

I’m going to introduce you to the hard work and dedicated attention that is vital to bringing your inimitable brightness into being.

If you love what you hear, join us on Teachable! You can also watch our About The RSOA series, there.

If you’re stimulated to respond – I’d love to hear your thoughts below.

The School of Real Art is passionate about your immense creative potential!
